Remember to also consider the cost of getting to the airport served by Spirit. It might only make sense if you’re booking for multiple people and it’s not too inconvenient to go there.
Checking Bags on Spirit Airlines
When you fly with Spirit, you can choose to pay for one or more checked bags. Usually, each bag should be smaller than 62 inches when you add up its length, width, and height. And it shouldn’t weigh more than 40 pounds. But, if you go for the Boost It or Bundle It upgrade packages on certain routes, your checked bag can weigh up to 50 pounds.
If your checked bag is heavier (up to 100 pounds) or bigger than allowed, you’ll have to pay extra fees.
The cost for checking bags depends on where you’re flying and when you pay for them. You can use a tool on Spirit’s website to figure out how much your bags will cost. Generally, it’s cheaper to pay for bags when you book your flight. But if you wait until you’re at the gate, it’ll be more expensive.
Checked bags usually cost less than carry-on bags. However, waiting in long lines at some airports to drop off your checked bag might not be worth the savings. At the gate, the fee for a checked bag is the same as for a carry-on bag.
