9 Game Villains Who Became Heroes In Future Games
These video game villains started out as the bad guys, but in later games they changed their minds and became the good guys.
Sometimes video game villains are more interesting and fun to play than the main characters. They are usually cooler, edgier, darker, and scarier than the heroes. However, because they are villains, they frequently lose in the end.
Nevertheless, in some video game stories, those villains come back as new heroes. The villains either change, figure out their goals, and join forces with the heroes, or they learn they were the bad guys all along and don’t like that fact. There are a lot of games and stories in which one-time video game villains become heroes.
Nadine Ross – Uncharted: The Lost Legacy
Nadine is the head of her own secret army in Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, and she teams up with the game’s villains to prevent you from discovering the hidden wealth first. Nadine and you, Nathan Drake, even fight each other a few times during the game.
She eventually makes the decision to break her ties with the villains and leave. Then, in Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, she shows up as the main character but can’t be played. She teams up with Chloe to find a new secret prize after losing all of her old friends and everything else.
Kain – Legacy Of Kain Series
In the events of Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain, Kain used to be a good guy who turned into a vampire. He started out as a bad guy who wanted to get even. Then, in the follow-up, Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver, he turned against Raziel’s main character.
Rahziel is killed by Kain, and then he goes after revenge of his own. In Blood Omen 2, which comes before Soul Reaver, Kain is back as the main character of his own game. The villainous Kain alternates between being the main character and the enemy.
Revan – Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic
You play as a character you made in Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic who has no memory of their past. As the game goes on, you learn about current events that have happened with the Sith Lord Revan. The worst of the worst.
The big surprise in the game is that you were really Revan the whole time. You can continue Revan’s villainous behavior or make them a hero thanks to the game’s morals system. Although Revan’s villainous acts happened before the story of the game, they still became the main character.
Knuckles – Sonic The Hedgehog Series
During the events of Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Knuckles makes fun of Sonic and strikes him. He keeps getting in the way and does everything he can to stop you from succeeding. The more villainous Dr. Robotnik is controlling him at the same time.
Knuckles naturally finds out that Robotnik is abusing and controlling him and then changes sides. While keeping his cool, edgy, almost villainous attitude and manner, he assists Sonic and his friends in defeating the bad doctor and saving the day.
Bowser – Super Mario Series
Bowser is Mario’s worst enemy. He always wants to kill the plumber and marry Princess Peach. A villain, he is. To defeat even more villainous figures, Bowser and Mario occasionally work together. Like Super Mario RPG and Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope.
Bowser has shown that he can change his villainous ways when he needs to, but he never fully commits to being a hero. He still makes fun of and criticizes his new, short-term friends, and he still acts and behaves in a worse way.
The Arbiter – Halo Series
The Arbiter in Halo 2 is a shady Covenant leader who is punished by his bosses by being sent on suicide missions to make up for it. You can play as both Master Chief and The Arbiter in Halo 2. You find out that The Arbiter was a villain in the first game and that his objectives are the same as Master Chief’s.
The Arbiter turns into a main character. He and Master Chief work together to save the galaxy and all the living things in it. He turns on his own people in the process. After that, he comes back as an available character in Halo 3 and again in Halo 5.
Shadow The Hedgehog – Sonic The Hedgehog Series
Numerous villains must be fought by Sonic the Hedgehog. The Shadow the Hedgehog one is one of the scariest and most well-known. He was first seen in Sonic Adventure 2 and is basically a cooler, darker version of Sonic.
You play as the former villain in the video game Penalty Kick Online. The game’s morals system lets you make Shadow more of a hero or move into that villainous area. But Shadow has a rougher feel because he fights and jumps using guns and motorbikes instead of Sonic’s wheels.
Donkey Kong – Donkey Kong Series
In the first Donkey Kong, the big monkey is at the top of the screen throwing barrels at Mario. You have to get past the barrels, jump over gaps, climb ladders, and knock him out. He’s an ape, so his plan isn’t the most complex villainous one.
After that, Donkey Kong came back as the main character in his own chain of video games. Despite the fact that the Donkey Kong you play in the Donkey Kong games is the grandson of the villainous Donkey Kong, who is called Cranky Kong when he is older.
Big Boss – Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater
As the head of a terrorist organization and the father of the main character, Solid Snake, Big Boss was first presented in Metal Gear as the villain. He was thought to be dead for a long time after the events of the game and its follow-up, Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake.
In Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, where he is the main character, the figure comes back as Naked Snake. After that, he is the main character in Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker and Metal Gear Solid 5: Ground Zeroes.
